Camera lenses are precision optical instruments. Of course some are more precise than others but most (good) lenses share one common characteristic – they are expensive. I always wondered why, especially at times when I was looking to buy. By visiting the Canon Virtual Lens Plant (external site) I was able to get some appreciation as to why you can pay upwards of $14,000 for a single lens, the estimated retail price for Canon’s most expensive regular production lens.
